Llegará el final de agosto, y con él, una de las galas de música más importantes del panorama internacional: Los MTV Video Music Awards, los premios en los que se reconocen aquellos videoclips que han marcado el año musical. Sin embargo, en tiempos de pandemia, hasta ellos se adaptarán a la nueva normalidad.
Se celebrarán en Nueva York, y por primera vez en su historia, las condiciones sanitarias podrían provocar que se celebrase con público muy reducido o incluso prescindir de él, tal y como pidió el gobernador de la ciudad. Será el primer gran evento que se celebre en el Barclays Center después de que la pandemia llegase a Estados Unidos.
La cadena ha confirmado que habrá actuaciones a pie de calle en lugares icónicos de la ciudad de Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, el Bronx y Staten Island, aunque tanto éstas como la gala se harán "con procedimientos de distancia social, limitaciones de capacidad y la virtualización de componentes en la medida que sea posible", según informa MTV.
Precisamente, ya que la pandemia ha truncado bastantes lanzamientos musicales en lo que va de año, la organización ha dispuesto dos nuevas categorías: Mejor vídeo desde casa y Mejor actuación en cuarentena. Como curiosidades, se puede ver que MTV se ha hecho eco del éxito de la música coreana incluyendo muchas más nominaciones para las boybands y girlbands de K-Pop, además de que enfrentarán a Taylor Swift y a Billie Eilish en la categoría de dirección después de que ambas se hayan hecho cargo de dos de sus últimos videoclips. Respecto a España, el trabajo de Rosalía vuelve a estar nominado, aunque sólo a mejor edición por uno de sus últimos videoclips; mientras que la productora catalana CANADÁ también está nominada gracias a uno de los últimos éxitos de Dua Lipa, Physical.
En el resto de categorías, los grandes nominados son Lady Gaga y Ariana Grande con nueve (gracias a su última colaboración), y Billie Eilish y The Weeknd con seis para cada uno.
